The Owner Independence Check
How well does your gym run when you're not there?
You opened your school to teach martial arts, develop students, and build something meaningful—not to personally manage every decision.
This quick self-check will help you identify where your gym depends too heavily on you and where a few practical changes could make the biggest difference.
The goal isn't to remove you from your gym. It's to give you more freedom to lead it.
How dependent is your gym on you?
The Owner Independence Check — 10 Questions
Think about how your gym operates today, not how you hope it operates.
For each statement, consider how strongly you agree or disagree.
Scoring guide:
Strongly disagree = −2
Disagree = −1
Neutral = 0
Agree = +1
Strongly agree = +2
Be honest with yourself. There are no right or wrong answers.
You can read through the questions and reflect, or write down your scores to identify areas that may need attention.
You don't need to share your answers to benefit from this assessment.
Instructor and staff independence
Clear responsibilities. My instructors and staff know exactly what they're responsible for without needing constant reminders.
Repeatable training. New instructors and staff receive structured training rather than learning everything by trial and error.
Classroom independence. My instructors can confidently teach quality classes when I'm not there.
Decision-making authority. My team knows which decisions they can make without asking my permission.
Problem-solving skills. When problems arise, staff can evaluate the situation and recommend practical solutions.
Schedule coverage. Classes, staffing changes, and routine scheduling issues can be handled without my direct involvement.
New student support. My instructors know how to welcome, guide, and support beginners through their first month.
Student engagement. My team notices when students begin disengaging and knows how to respond before they disappear.
Staff development. We regularly coach, evaluate, and help instructors improve their teaching and leadership skills.
Owner freedom. I can step away from the gym for several days without routine problems and decisions piling up.
What your answers reveal
If you recorded a score for each of the ten statements, add them together.
Possible total score: −20 to +20
A higher score suggests your instructors and staff may operate with greater independence.
But your overall score isn't the most important thing.
Look especially at the statements where you answered Strongly Disagree (−2) or Disagree (−1).
These answers may reveal where your gym depends too heavily on you—and where better training, clearer responsibilities, or simple systems could make a difference.
Even a positive overall score can hide an important weakness.
This is a practical self-assessment, not a scientifically validated diagnostic tool. There are no established passing scores.
Start with one area that needs attention. What's one practical improvement you could test this week?
